WEST POINT, N.Y. - In its fifth-straight contest away from home, the Air Force lacrosse team fell to service academy rival Army, 14-9, Saturday afternoon at Michie Stadium. The Falcons drop to 2-3 on the season with the loss, while the Black Knights move to 3-2 on the year.
Army was first to score in the contest and held a 3-1 advantage before long-stick midfielder Dan Gnazzo (Sr., Eden Prairie, Minn.) scored his first goal of the season to spark a three-goal run for the Falcons. Air Force's first lead of the contest came with just over a minute remaining in the opening period, as Vinny Sandtorv (So., Centereach, N.Y.) tallied his first score of the game. However, the Black Knights responded with a goal just before time expired to tie the game back at 4-4.
The Falcons never led again in the contest, as Army outscored Air Force 5-2 in the second quarter. The Black Knights grabbed their largest advantage, 12-6, with 12:13 left in the third period, before a pair of back-to-back goals from Ridge Flick (Plano, Texas) and Gnazzo nearly eight minutes later stopped an Air Force scoring drought.
Trailing 12-8 after third quarters, the Falcons got back within three with a goal from defenseman Bryan Gilbreath (So., Bainbridge Island, Wash.) early in the final period, but Army closed out the scoring with two more goals to take the 14-9 victory.
Sandtorv led Air Force scorers with three goals, for his second multiple-goal output of the season, while Gnazzo had a career-high two scores. Senior captain Griffin Nevitt (Charlotte, N.C.) added a goal and an assist, and Colin Lockhart (Sr., Richmond, Va.) notched the final Air Force score with the only man-up goal of the game for either team.
For the Black Knights, Kevin LoRusso tallied three goals, while Jeremy Peyer recorded a game-high five points (two goals, three assists).
The Falcons open the conference season next weekend, March 14, when they travel to Hamden, Conn., to take on Quinnipiac.
