Falcons Conclude First Day of Action at NCBA Championships

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Backed by five victories, the Air Force boxing team opened competition at the National Collegiate Boxing Association (NCBA) Championships in College Park, Md. Eight of the 10 boxers competed during the two quarterfinal bouts on Thursday, April 2, and posted a 5-3 record.
Air Force began action in the 125-pound weight class, after the two lightest contenders (Matt DeMars, 112-lbs.; Jesse Horton, 119-lbs.) had quarterfinal byes. Senior Harvey White defeated Maryland's E.J. Mead by decision in the 125-pound bout, while classmate Nathan Liptak recorded a 147-pound decision over Cory Moyer of The Citadel.
Freshman Mike McLain had an impressive debut on the national stage, earning a decision over Army's A.J. Pisano in the 175-pound quarterfinal. Senior team captain Boyce Loomis defeated West Virginia's Pat McLaughlin by decision at 185 pounds and, in one of the day's shortest bouts, junior Cory Tintzman defeated Northern Kentucky's Adam Brown when the referee stopped the contest in the first round.
Three other seniors also competed during the first day of action at the national championships. Dean Chuva dropped a 132-pound decision to Mansfield's Jarrett Hill, while Sean May fell by decision to Army's Ryle Stous in the 156-pound bout and Andrew Catoire dropped a decision to Coast Guard's Patrick Frost in the 195-pound bout.
Air Force is currently in third with seven points, only three points shy of meet leader Navy (10). Army sits in second with nine points, leaving the other 20 programs in attendance to trail the three service academies.
Action continues tomorrow (April 3) with the semifinal bouts at Richie Coliseum on the campus of the University of Maryland.
