Air Force Advances Three to NCBA Championship Finals

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Air Force boxing team advanced three contenders to the finals of the National Collegiate Boxing Association (NCBA), after a tough hard-fought round of semifinal action on Friday, April 4, in College Park, Md. Seniors Jesse Horton and Boyce Loomis earned victories in the semifinal round, while sophomore Matt DeMars had a bye for the second straight night.
Horton advanced to the national title bout for the third straight year, after defeating Kentucky's Tyler Sexton by decision in the 119-pound semifinal. Loomis earned a decision over The Citadel's Sam Greenwood the semifinal bracket of the 185-pound division to claim his first appearance in the finals.
Four other Falcons competed during the national semifinals. Senior Harvey White dropped a decision to Penn State's Jake Winowich in the 125-pound bout, while classmate Nathan Liptak suffered his first loss of the season (6-1) at the hands of Kentucky's Jamyle Cannon. Freshman Mike McLain's impressive debut season came to a close with a 175-pound decisional loss to Sam Greenwood of The Citadel and junior Cory Tintzman was decisioned by Army's Cedric Fraser in the heavyweight contest.
After two days of competition, Air Force sits in third with 16 points. The Falcons are in a battle with Navy (25 points) for second-place. Army leads the 23-team field with 33 points.
Action concludes at the NCBA Championships tomorrow (April 4) night at Maryland's Richie Coliseum.
