Multi-Event Athletes Off to Strong Start at MWC Championships

LARAMIE, Wyo. - Highlighted by numerous personal-best marks, the four multi-event athletes of the Air Force track and field team opened competition this afternoon (May 13) at the Mountain West Conference Championships in Laramie, Wyo. After the first day of action, junior Danielle McCarty (heptathlon) and senior Skylar Morgan (decathlon) lead the quartet with four-place marks in their respective events.
McCarty collected a career-best first day total of 2,795 points to place fourth, while setting personal-best marks in all four events. McCarty's best event finish of the day came in the high jump, where she finished third with a clearance of 5'2½". She also added a fourth-place time of 15.28 in the 100-meter hurdles and a fifth-place score of 26.77 in the 200-meter dash. In addition, she finished fifth in the shot put with a distance of 33'1".
Freshman Phaelen French also accounted for a personal-best first-day total, amassing 2,146 heptathlon points to stand in eighth. She improved her career-best marks in the 100-meter hurdles (17.88, seventh) and high jump (4'8¾", eighth), while also posting a distance of 28'8¼" (ninth) in the shot put. She also clocked a time of 27.85 in the 200-meter dash to place ninth.
With 3,497 points, Morgan is ranked fourth in the decathlon after the first five events. Morgan's best finish of the day came at the high jump, as he tied for first with a clearance of 6'2¼". He also picked up third-place marks the long jump (21'11¾", career-best) and shot put (36'5", season-best), while finishing fourth in the 100-meter dash (11.35, career-best) and fifth in the 400-meter dash (52.06, career-best).
Sophomore Noah Palicia is currently fifth with 3,292 points. His best first-day finish came in the 400-meter dash, as he placed second with a season-best time of 50.10. He set additional career-best marks in the shot put (34'7", fourth), 100-meter dash (11.43, fifth), long jump (19'9¾", sixth) and high jump (5'9¾", sixth).
In all, the four Air Force multi-event athletes accounted for 13 career-best marks in 18 possible events.
Multi-event action concludes at noon tomorrow (Thursday, May 14) with the final events of the heptathlon and decathlon. The rest of the conference championships get underway on Friday, May 15, at 11 a.m.
