Whitney Finishes 27th at NCAA Regional

STILLWATER, Okla. - In his final competition of the season, Air Force junior Tom Whitney (La Quinta, Calif.) placed 27th at the 2009 NCAA Men's Golf South Central Regional Championship, being held at the par-72, 7,407-yard Karsten Creek Golf Course.
Whitney, one of 10 participants competing as an individual, shot a 79 on Saturday to bring his three-round total to 229 (+13). With his score, Whitney ranked fifth among the individual qualifiers competing at the regional.
Whitney's performance at the NCAA Regional capped off an outstanding season for the Falcon, who led the team in all 12 tournaments this year, including the MWC Championships. An all-conference selection for the first time in his career, Whitney has recorded a 72.0 stroke average for the season, setting a school record in that category. His trip to the NCAA Regional this season was the first for an Air Force golfer since Tyler Goulding in 2005.
Second-ranked and top-seeded host Oklahoma State captured the regional title, with a three-round score of 881 (+17), while the Cowboys' Kevin Tway captured medalist honors with an even-par 216.
Teams from the regional earning bids to the NCAA Championships, which will be held May 26-30 at the Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio, were Oklahoma State, Arkansas, Chattanooga, Northwestern and TCU. Meanwhile, Baylor's Cody Paladino beat LSU's John Peterson in a playoff to determine the regional's lone individual qualifier to the NCAA Championships.
