Evening Report: Houseworth Places 15th in 10,000-Meter Run
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Air Force junior Sara Neubauer became just the third female Division I All-American in Air Force track and history, with an eighth-place finish in the shot put at the 2009 NCAA Championships this afternoon (June 11) in Fayetteville, Ark. In addition to her All-America status in the shot put, Neubauer advanced to the finals of the discus throw.
On her first attempt on the day, Neubauer tossed a distance of 52'11½". That mark, which placed her sixth after the first three attempts, would carry her through to the finals and on to the first All-America certificate of her career. Highlighted by the fourth-best throw of her career, Neubauer surpassed the 50-foot mark on all three of her `fair' attempts.
Florida's Marian Kevkhishvili won the national title with a throw of 58'4½".
Neubauer joins former Air Force standouts Dana Pounds (2004-05-06, javelin throw) and Olivia Korte (2006, discus throw) to earn NCAA All-America status at the Division I level. She is the 13th female overall (at both the Division I and Division II levels) to claim an All-America certificate.
Earlier in the day, Neubauer advanced to the finals of the discus throw to keep the Falcons' field event athletes perfect in the qualifying round. Despite fouling off her first two attempts, Neubauer heaved a 169'5" on her final chance to earn a spot in the finals. That mark ranked seventh overall in the 28-competitor event. After a busy start to the national meet, Neubauer will be off until Saturday, June 13, when she competes in the 12-person finals of the discus throw at 12 p.m. (CDT).
