Six Air Force Swimmers Named MWC Scholar-Athletes

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Six members of the Air Force men's and women's swimming and diving teams were named Mountain West Conference Scholar-Athletes for the 2008-09 season, as announced by the league Wednesday afternoon. Representing the men's squad were Johnathan Cox, Cody Deacon and Eric Robinson, while on the women's side, Jane Hwang, Kaeli Kluesner and Rachel Reeder earned MWC Scholar-Athlete recognition.
All three honorees on the women's side earn the first MWC Scholar-Athlete accolades of their respective careers. Hwang, the Falcons' team captain and MVP in 2008-09, graduated from the Academy last month with a degree in biology. The Irvine, Calif., native, who was a seven-time all-conference performer and school record-holder in four events, ended her career with a 3.53 GPA. In addition, Kluesner, a rising junior from Denver, Colo., currently holds a 3.50 GPA in legal studies, while Reeder, a rising sophomore from St. Thomas, Pa., finished her freshman year with a 3.98 GPA in biology.
For the men, Robinson, a rising junior from Lakewood, Colo., earns MWC Scholar-Athlete honors for the second-straight year. A first-team Academic All-District selection and member of the Falcons' school-record-setting 800 freestyle relay, Robinson is a math major with a 3.98 GPA. Meanwhile, rising sophomores Cox and Deacon each receive the honor after their first season of competition. Cox, a native of Kingwood, Texas, holds a 3.58 GPA, while Deacon, a Portland, Ore., native, carries a 3.57 GPA in aeronautical engineering.
A league-record 548 student-athletes were named Mountain West Conference Scholar-Athletes for the 2008-09 season. The MWC Scholar-Athlete Award is the highest academic honor bestowed by the Conference. To be eligible for selection, student-athletes must have completed at least two academic terms at the member institution, while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better, and have participated in varsity competition in an NCAA-sponsored sport.
