Air Force Throwers Conclude Second Day at USATF Championships

EUGENE, Ore. - Three current members of the Air Force track and field team took to the throwing circles for the second day of action at the 2009 USA Track and Field Championships on Friday, June 26, in Eugene, Ore. Air Force was represented at Hayward Field by a pair throwers at the junior championships, as well as one at the senior-level championship meet.Two rising sophomores competed in the USA Junior National Championships. Robert Drye placed 14th in the hammer throw, while Paige Blackburn finished 16th in the shot put.
Drye, who finished within the top half of the field, recorded a throw of 187'0" - a mark just seven inches shy of his personal best. He opened the meet with a toss of 167'7" and followed that up with a toss of 173'9", before collecting his best throw at 187'0".
Blackburn placed 16th in the shot put with a toss of 44'2". She had a very consistent outing in her debut at the national meet, as all three throws dropped less than a foot apart. She opened the meet with a throw of 43'10½", before recording her scoring toss of 44'2". She concluded her outing with a distance of 43'7¼".
Senior-to-be Sara Neubauer competed in the shot put of the senior meet, but fouled off all three attempts.
Blackburn continues action tomorrow (June 27) when she competes in the javelin throw at the junior championship meet. Senior-to-be Nick Frawley and Air Force graduate Capt Paul Gensic will compete in the senior pole vault, while national champion Dana (Pounds) Lyon will participate in the senior javelin throw.
