USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - Air Force senior Matt Williams (Colorado Springs, Colo.) was named to the 2009 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VII Team for track/field and cross country, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and released this morning (June 4). Williams received first-team status in the district and will be on the national ballot for Academic All-America® status.
Williams graduated from the Academy last week with a 3.63 grade-point-average in behavioral sciences. He is a six-time academic all-conference selection for track and cross country, as well as a Mountain West Conference Scholar-Athlete in both sports. A co-captain of the cross country team, Williams was an all-conference and all-region selection. He was also the top Air Force finisher in three meets, including the NCAA Regional Championships. The backbone of the Falcons' 3000-meter steeplechase lineup during the outdoor season, Williams clocked the third-fastest time in Academy history (8:54.36) at the regional meet, where he finished sixth. During his final season, he scored for the Falcons at the conference championships in the 3000- and 5000-meter races during the indoor season and in the 3000-meter steeplechase and 5000-meter run at the outdoor meet.
It is the fourth straight year that a member of the Air Force track and field team has earned academic all-district honors. The national team will be announced on Thursday, June 18.
