Falcons to HBU This Weekend
The Air Force Falcons travel to Texas this weekend for a pair of games in the Houston Baptist University Classic. Air Force, 3-3-1 this season, will take on Howard University on Friday, Oct. 2 at 2 p.m., then Houston Baptist on Sunday, Oct. 4 at 2 p.m.
Howard is 2-6 this year, while Houston Baptist is 4-5.
Falcons Drop Two in California
The Falcons lost a pair of games at the Stanford Nike Classic in California last weekend. On Friday, the Falcons dropped a 3-2 decision to Stanford despite getting goals from seniors Steven Noller and Jared Gomez. On Sunday, fifth-ranked Cal dominated Air Force and won 3-0 in freshman goalie Mike Mauro's first career start for AFA.
Gomez Nets First Career Goal
For the fourth time in seven games this season, an Air Force player scored his first career goal. On Friday against Stanford, it was senior Jared Gomez. Gomez scored in the 64th minute to cut the Cardinal's lead to 3-2. Senior Steven Noller and sophomore Ben Chavez assisted on the play.
Gullo Still Tops in the MPSF
Senior Jim Gullo continues to lead the MPSF in goals-against average (0.87) and saves percentage (.808). He made four saves and allowed two goals in the first half against Stanford last Friday before giving way to freshman Mike Mauro for the second half. Mauro then played the emtire game against Cal. Gullo, who led the conference last season with 88 saves, has 21 this season while allowing just five goals in six games.
Gullo is also ranked in the national stats as well. He is 60th in the country in goals-against average and 54th in saves percentage.

Stanford 3, Air Force 2

Stanford scored three unanswered goals within a span of 27 minutes Friday night to lead the Cardinal men's soccer team to a 3-2 victory over Air Force in the first round of the Stanford Nike Classic in Palo Alto, Calif. Air Force, which had its four-game unbeaten streak snapped, fell to 3-2-1 this season, while Stanford improved to 5-1.
The Falcons took a 1-0 lead 17:11 into the game when senior Steven Noller notched his team-leading third goal of the season after taking a through pass from freshman Zane Dydasco and placed a shot past Cardinal goalie John Moore. Senior Josh Rhynard also collected an assist on the play.
Stanford evened the score at 1-all in the 24th minute when Bobby Warshaw knocked a penalty kick past Falcon netminder Jim Gullo. Adam Jahn gave Stanford a 2-1 lead in the 32nd minute after taking a pass from Daniel Leon and firing a shot past Gullo.
After Air Force freshman goalie Mike Mauro entered the game to begin the second half for his first career appearance, Warshaw gave Stanford an insurmountable 3-1 lead with his second tally of the game in the 51st minute. Michael Strickland sent a crossing pass into the box off a free kick that Warshaw dove for and headed into the net past Mauro.
Falcon senior Jared Gomez closed the scoring with his first career goal in the 64th minute. Noller collected the ball in the midfield and found sophomore Ben Chavez . Chavez then one-touched a pass to Gomez, who found the back of the net.
The Cardinal outshot Air Force, 20-9, and held a 9-4 advantage in shots on goal. Noller and Jahn each had a game-high three shots on goal. Gullo made four saves while Mauro had two. Moore made two saves for Stanford.
No. 5 California 3, Air Force 0

Andrew Weideman scored two first-half goals and Demitrius Omphroy added a goal and an assist to lead the fifth-ranked California men's soccer team to a 3-0 victory over Air Force Sunday in the third-place game of the Stanford Nike Classic in Berkeley, Calif. Cal improved to 5-2 this season while the Falcons fell to 3-3-1.
Stanford, with a 2-0 win over New Mexico earlier today in Palo Alto, Calif., won the Classic with a 2-0-0 record. Cal and New Mexico each finished 1-1-0, while Air Force was 0-2 in the tournament.
Weideman opened the scoring just 8:13 into the game by heading a pass from Jeff Cosgriff past Falcon freshman goalie Mike Mauro, who started the first game of his career. Omphroy also collected an assist on the play.
After having his penalty kick saved by Mauro in the 25th minute, Weideman made it 2-0 when he pounced on the rebound and found the back of the net past Mauro.
Omphrey wrapped up the scoring with a goal in the 59th minute. Cosgriff sent a crossing pass into the box that deflected off a Falcon defender right to Omphrey, who beat Mauro for a 3-0 advantage.
With the early goal, the Cal defense stifled Air Force's offense the rest of the way, allowing the Falcons just one shot on goal, which was by senior Steven Noller in the 71st minute and the only save by Cal keeper Robby Gogatz, who also made his first career start. The Bears held a 17-6 advantage in overall shots and had nine corner kicks, compared to none by AFA. Mauro made seven saves for Air Force.
