MILFORD, Conn. -Sacred Heart erased an early Air Force lead to score four unanswered goals in a 4-1 win over the Falcons, in an Atlantic Hockey Association game, Saturday night, Jan. 2, at the Milford Ice Pavilion in Milford, Conn.
Air Force fell to 8-7-4 overall and 8-3-4 in the league. Sacred Heart improved to 5-9-2 overall and 3-6-1 in the AHA.
Air Force got on the board first when freshman Stephen Carew scored on the power play. Jeff Hajner sent a centering pass from the left boards and Carew scored his fourth of the season at the 9:08 mark. Brett Nylander also assisted on the play. With just over six minutes left in the period, Eric Delong took a shot from the left circle that bounced hard off the back wall and came out to the far side of the net. David Berube was all alone on the weak side and tied the game with his fifth of the year.
Sacred Heart scored the only goal of the second period and took a 2-1 lead. David Jarman's centering pass from the boards and tipped in by Nick Johnson at 6:48 of the second.
The Pioneers scored two goals in the third period. Berube scored his second of the game from the top of the crease at the 5:27 mark. The Falcons pulled goaltender Andrew Volkening from the net with 3:43 left in the third. With 2:22 remaining, Nick Johnson cleared the puck down the ice that bounced hard off the back boards and Patrick Knowlton put it in the empty net to seal the 4-1 win.
"I was impressed with Sacred Heart's compete level," head coach Frank Serratore said. "They played a very determined game. When we turned it over, they took advantage and got some quality shots. Defensively, they protected their house very well. They had the majority of the Grade A opportunities. They were a very difficult team to play against and won a great majority of the one one-on-one battles below the tops of the circles. We have to somehow acquire a blue-collar edge to our game."
Sacred Heart outshot Air Force, 40-28. Pioneer freshman goalie Steven Legatto made 27 saves while Andrew Volkening made 37 for the Falcons. AFA was 1-for-3 on the power play while Sacred Heart was 0-for-4.
The same two teams conclude the series Sunday, Jan. 3, at 7:05 ET in Milford, Conn.
