The Air Force women's tennis team improved to 2-1 this spring with a pair of victories Friday at the Academy. The Falcons, who swept the three doubles matches in each match and had four singles players go 2-0 on the day, defeated Seattle University, 7-0, and Gonzaga, 6-1.
Air Force opened the day by sweeping all nine matches against Seattle. Freshmen Melissa Cecil and Hannah Dake won the No. 1 doubles match over Audree Jenks and Nicole Fleckenstein, 8-6. Junior Katrina Eromin and sophomore Allie Chermel won at the No.2 spot, 8-3, over Ariel Ohno and Steffanie Mortera, while junior Christen Monreal and freshman Christine Molina won at No. 3 by the same score over Katrina Schwab and Mikaela Peterson.
In singles play, Molina captured the No. 1 match with a 7-5, 6-4 decision over Ohno, while Monreal pulled out a three-set victory over Schwab, 6-1, 3-6, 6-2, at the No. 2 spot. Sophomore Tahlia Smoke, the reigning MWC player of the week, flew by Jenks, 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 and Cecil downed Fleckenstein, 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 4 position. Juniors Sarah Cassman and Eromin won in straight sets at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively.
In the nightcap against Gonzaga, the Falcons used the same doubles lineup and captured all three matches, including an impressive 8-0 victory by Dake and Cecil at the top spot. Monreal and Molina exchanged singles spots at the top of the lineup, but once again each produced a victory. Molina went three sets this time, defeating Kristina Zauere, 4-6, 6-0, 6-3. Dake (No. 3), Cecil (No. 5) and Cassman (No. 6) each won in straight sets.
Gonzaga's Prue Teitzel notched the Bulldogs' lone win, defeating Smoke at the No. 4 spot, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.
"I am very pleased with the way that everyone stepped up today," said Air Force head coach Kim Gidley. "We could have easily lost both of these matches - but the team converted when they had an opportunity and we came away with two wins."
