Falcons Continue Conference Play at UNLV and UNM
The Air Force Falcons return home for a pair of Mountain Pacific Sports Federation games this weekend. On Friday, Oct. 15, Air Force hosts UNLV at 7 p.m., then plays New Mexico on Sunday, Oct. 17 at 1 p.m. The Falcons are 3-8 after splitting games against those same opponents last weekend on the road. Air Force lost to UNLV, 1-0, then beat UNM, 3-2. UNLV is 4-6-1 after beating Air Force and tying Denver, 0-0, while the Lobos are 4-4-2 entering their game Friday at Denver after losing to AFA and Denver (1-0) last weekend.
Air Force Splits Games on the Road
The Falcons split a pair of games on the road last weekend. Air Force lost 1-0 at UNLV on Friday, but rebounded for a dramatic 3-2 victory at New Mexico on Sunday. Jonny Espinoza scored the game-winning goal in the 74th minute for UNLV as the Falcons were blanked for the seventh time this season.
On Sunday, Air Force scored three goals in a span of 5:32 in the second half to post its first win over UNM in Albuquerque since 2001. Sophomore Zane Dydasco scored a goal and added an assist and freshman Caleb Downey scored his first career goal.
Dydasco tied the game at 1-all in the 72nd minute with an unassisted goal, then Downey put the Falcons ahead for good just 1:38 later. Sophomore Kevin Durr scored an insurance goal in the 77th minute off a nice pass from Dydasco to give AFA an insurmountable 3-1 lead.
Rare Scoring Barrage at UNM
With its 3-2 victory Sunday in Albuquerque, Air Force became the first opponent to score three goals at New Mexico since San Jose State beat the Lobos, 3-2, on Oct. 16, 2005. In fact, New Mexico has allowed at least three goals in a game just seven times since the beginning of the 2003 campaign.
Underwood's Still Up There in Saves
Sophomore keeper Matt Underwood is second in the MPSF in saves with 42 and fourth in saves per game at 4.2. Underwood, who earned his first career start in the season opener against Houston Baptist, has a .689 saves percentage and a 2.04 goals-against average.
Falcons Lead The League in Shots
Air Force continues to lead the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation with 171 shots taken. UNLV and San Jose State are tied for second with 161 shots. Unfortunately, only 56 of AFA's 171 shots have been on goal.
Individually, sophomore Kevin Durr is third in the conference with 34 total shots. Durr leads the team with 11 shots on goal, followed by senior Kyle Moses with nine and sophomore Zane Dydasco with eight. Durr is tied for third inthe MPSF with two game-winning goals.
Series vs. Opponents
The Falcons hold a 15-10-3 advantage in the overall series with UNLV. The Rebels snapped a four-game losing streak to Air Force last weekend. AFA also owns an advantage in the all-time series against New Mexico, holding a 17-15-1 lead. Last year, the Falcons snapped a seven-game losing streak and 11-game winless streak to the Lobos with a 1-0 victory at home.
Falcons Picked Eighth in Preseason Poll
The Falcons were picked eighth in the 2010 MPSF preseason coaches poll, voted on by the league's eight head coaches. New Mexico received 46 points and four of eight first-place votes in earning the No. 1 spot, while defending MPSF champion Sacramento State collected 43 points and three top votes in taking second in the poll. Denver was picked third with 31 points, followed by CSU Bakersfield, San Jose State, Seattle, UNLV and Air Force.
