Falcons Continue MPSF Play With Pair at Home
The Air Force Falcons continue Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play this weekend with their final two home games of the season. On Friday, Oct. 22, Air Force hosts San Jose State at 7 p.m., then plays Sacramento State on Sunday, Oct. 24 at 1 p.m. The Falcon seniors will be honored before the Sunday game, the last home game of their careers. The Falcons are 4-9 after splitting a pair of home games last weekend. Air Force defeated UNLV, 2-0, then lost to New Mexico in heartbreaking fashion, 1-0, as the Lobos scored with two seconds remaining in regulation time. San Jose State is 7-5-2 overall and 1-2-2 in the MPSF, while Sacramento State is 6-3-4 overall and 1-1-3 in league play entering its game Friday at Denver.
Air Force Splits Games with UNLV and UNM
The Falcons split a pair of games at Cadet Soccer Stadium last weekend. Air Force avenged a 1-0 loss at UNLV a week before by defeating the Rebels 2-0 on Friday night. Kevin Durr put home a penalty kick in the 68th minute and Brian Klazura scored an insurance goal with less than a minute remaining. Sophomore Matt Underwood made four saves to record the first shutout of his career.
On Sunday, the Falcons were set to go to overtime with a scoreless draw until UNM's Devon Sandoval flicked a header just inside the left post with two seconds remaining in regulation time. Sandoval took a crossing pass from Patrick Pacheco and placed it past Underwood for the game's lone goal. Underwood made four saves for the Falcons.
Falcons Firmly in Playoff Race
If the season ended today, Air Force would be the final team in the MPSF playoffs. With the league splitting into two divisions this season, the top two teams from each division as well as the next two top teams, regardless of division, advance to the league postseason. Right now, Air Force has six points, one more than San Jose State and two more than Seattle.
Underwood's Still Up There in Saves
Sophomore keeper Matt Underwood is second in the MPSF in saves with 50 and fifth in saves per game at 4.17. Underwood, who earned his first career shutout last Friday night against UNLV, has a .714 saves percentage and a 1.77 goals-against average.
Falcons Lead The League in Shots
Air Force continues to lead the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation with 213 shots taken. New Mexico is second with 192 shots. Unfortunately, only 66 of AFA's 213 shots have been on goal.
Individually, sophomore Kevin Durr is third in the conference with 40 total shots. Durr leads the team with 14 shots on goal, followed by senior Kyle Moses with 12 and sophomore Zane Dydasco with eight. Durr is tied for second in the MPSF with three game-winning goals.
Series vs. Opponents
San Jose State holds a 19-7-3 advantage in the overall series with Air Force. The Spartans have won the last three games between the two teams and AFA has not beaten San Jose State at home since 2006. AFA is 10-11 in the all-time series against Sacramento State. The Hornets have a two-game winning streak against the Falcons.
