DES MOINES, Iowa - Despite a second-half rally, the Air Force women's basketball team was unable to overcome its early deficit, dropping a 77-61 decision to Drake Wednesday evening at the Knapp Center.
Sophomore Kelsey Berger (Mentor, Ohio) led the Falcons with 13 points, while freshman Camille Thompson (McDonough, Ga.) added a career-high-tying 12 points. Also scoring in double-figures for Air Force was senior Raimee Beck (Blackfoot, Idaho), who finished the game with 10 points and a team-high six rebounds.
Air Force (4-7) was hurt by poor shooting and turnovers in the first half, as Drake (6-5) went on a 14-0 run early in the period. The Bulldogs led by as many as 16 points before taking a 34-19 advantage at the break.
After the intermission, the Falcons were able to cut down on their miscues, while pressuring the Bulldogs into 15 second-half turnovers. However, Drake, which had shot over 53 percent from the field in the first half, was even hotter in the second stanza. The Bulldogs shot 63 percent in the period, leading by as many as 25 points in the game. Air Force began to slowly chip away at the margin, but was unable to stop Drake from scoring in the 16-point loss.
Kristin Turk scored 23 points to lead Drake, while Rachael Hackbarth added 12 points.
The Falcons return to action next Thursday, Dec. 30, when they host service academy rival Navy. The game is slated to begin at 6:00 p.m. in Clune Arena.
