The Air Force Academy fencing team competed at the Eric Sollee Invitational at Brandeis University, Waltham, Mass., Jan. 30. The men's team went 5-1, defeating NYU, Boston College, MIT, Brown and Brandeis, while Harvard defeated the Falcons, 17-10. Two men had noteworthy individual records. Junior Nicholas Stockdale anchored the men's foil team with a 15-3 record during the tournament and junior Daniel Trapani led the men's epee team with a 16-2 record. Trapani's two losses came against MIT and Harvard.
The women's team went 0-6. Two women finished with stellar individual records. In women's saber, freshman Heather Nelson compiled a 14-4 record in her first NCAA tournament. In women's epee, sophomore Simone Barrette had a 14-4 record against her opponents. Both fencers are off to a strong start in NCAA competition and are in a good position to qualify for the NCAA Championships in March.
"The women had a tough competition, but they are a young team and they fenced hard," said head coach Abdel Salem. "Our women's foil team needs more experience and I am confident they will improve. The team is looking forward to competing against the excellent teams next weekend at Duke."
Duke will host its annual home meet, a two-day tournament, in Card Gym on Feb. 6-7. Attending the tournament will be Brandeis, Penn State, Air Force, North Carolina, the Johns Hopkins men's team and the Temple women's team.
