Danielle McCarty Places Sixth at MWC Pentathlon

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Senior Danielle McCarty used a career-high 3448 points to place sixth in the pentathlon during the first day of action at the 2010 Mountain West Conference Track and Field Championships in Albuquerque, N.M. Sophomore Phaelen French also posted a career-best tally (2973) in the only final contested on Thursday, Feb. 25.
McCarty opened the day with a time of 9.50 in the 60-meter hurdles, before posting a clearance of 5'3¼" in the high jump. She tossed a 31'10¼" in the shot put, before posted a season-best 17'0¾" in the long jump. McCarty concluded the day with a time of 2:24.06 in the 800-meter run to finish sixth. Her score is a Senior Class record and the second-highest total in Air Force Academy history.
French used a winning time of 2:23.20 in the 800-meter run to post a career-high total of 2973 points and finish 12th at the conference championships. She added marks of 4'8¼" in the high jump and 15'3¼" in the long jump, as well as a career-best 31'11¼" in the shot put, before collecting the winning time in the 800-meter run.
French (first) and McCarty (third) accounted for two of the top-three times in the 800-meter run.
Three members of the men's heptathlon also began competition today. Freshman Michael Tibbs is currently in sixth with 2536 points, while freshman Blair O'Bryant and sophomore Jacob Ringrose are 11th (2185) and 12th (2108), respectively.
Tibbs clocked a time of 7.46 in the 60-meter dash, before recording a long jump distance of 20'7¼". He threw 36'10½" to finish third in the shot put, before recording a career-best clearance of 5'9¾" in the high jump. O'Bryant recorded marks of 7.53 (60-meter dash), 19'7½" (long jump, career-best), 30'5½" (shot put) and 5'2½" (high jump), while Ringrose posted marks of 7.52 (60-meter dash), 16'8½" (long jump), 34'9¾" (shot put) and 5'3¾" (high jump).
The Falcons return to action tomorrow (Friday, Feb. 26) with the conclusion of the heptathlon and the start of the individual events. The heptathlon begins at 11 a.m., while the individual field events get underway at 1 p.m. and the races are scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m.
