LARAMIE, Wyo. - Air Force freshman Cole VonOhlen (Jackson, Minn.) and Wyoming sophomore Joe LeBlanc have been named the Western Wrestling Conference Co-Wrestlers of the Week, as announced today by the league. This marks VonOhlen's second weekly honor of the season, while it is the first for LeBlanc this season and second in his career.
VonOhlen led the Falcons to a second-place finish at the 16th-annual All-Academy Championships, earning an individual title in his first appearance at the event. Currently ranked 15th in the nation at 141 pounds, VonOhlen recorded falls in all three of his weekend matches, pinning Norwich's Nick Monaco in a time of 1:20 in the opening round, while notching a fall over fourth-seed David Yost of VMI in a time of 1:42.
In the championship match versus Navy's Matt Pagan, seeded second, VonOhlen held a 3-2 advantage in the waning moments of the bout before pinning Pagan with just one second remaining on the clock. VonOhlen now has a team-best 12 falls on the year and improved his record to 26-5 on the year.
Meanwhile, LeBlanc, an All-American in 2009, helped the Cowboys improve to 5-0 in the WWC with a pair of impressive performance against conference opponents. Ranked ninth at 184 pounds, LeBlanc pinned South Dakota State's David Michaud at the 4:15 mark, while scoring an 18-2 technical fall over North Dakota State's Kenny Moenkedick. LeBlanc now holds a 30-4 record on the year, including a 12-1 dual mark and 5-0 ledger in the WWC.
The Air Force wrestlers are back in action this weekend with a pair of dual meets, first traveling to Greeley, Colo., on Friday, Feb. 12, to take on conference rival Northern Colorado. The Falcons then host Cal State Fullerton on Sunday, Feb. 14, in a 2:00 p.m. contest.
