VonOhlen Concludes Season at NCAA Championships

OMAHA, Neb. - Making his first NCAA appearance, Air Force freshman Cole VonOhlen (Jackson, Minn.) dropped a pair of matches on the first day of competition at the 2010 Division I Wrestling Championships.

VonOhlen, who was ranked 18th in the latest Intermat rankings, drew a tough opponent in the opening round, facing off against sixth-ranked Montell Marion of Iowa. VonOhlen held his own with his highly ranked opponent, countering each takedown with an escape and adding a takedown of his own at the end of the match. However, Marion used his offense to earn an 11-8 decision, sending VonOhlen into the consolation bracket.

VonOhlen moved into a pigtail match against a familiar foe, Northern Colorado's Kenny Hashimoto. This bout would prove to be the rubber match for the two opponents, as the wrestlers split a pair of contests this season. Scoring five takedowns and a reversal, Hashimoto came out on top in this battle, registering a 13-7 decision.

With his appearance at the NCAA Championships, VonOhlen capped off a spectacular rookie campaign, finishing with a 31-9 overall record. He became the first Air Force freshman to qualify for the national tournament since Jake Kriegbaum in 2005. In addition, he was also the first Falcon to reach 30 wins since Beau Tresemer posted a 32-13 record in 2005.
