SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - The Air Force boxing team claimed its 30th regional team title with a dominating performance during the final night of competition at the National Collegiate Boxing Association (NCBA) West Regional Championships on Saturday, March 20, in San Francisco, Calif. Seven Falcons claimed individual titles, as the squad picked up their 30th title in the last 31 years.
After a pair of lightweight losses, junior Michael Mizes claimed the Falcons' first victory, defeating Cal's Dave Rosenfield by retirement in the third round. Mizes victory sparked a four-bout win streak by Air Force. Senior Bailey Ball took a decision from Cal's Phil Bremger at 139 pounds, while junior Joe Silvio won the 156-pound bout against Corey Deal of UNLV.
Classmate Dalton Hall earned a victory over San Jose State's Allan Cheng in the 165-pound final, when the referee stopped their bout in the second round. For his commanding performance, Hall was named the regional's Most Outstanding Boxer for the upper weight classes. Senior team captain Cory Tintzman rounded out the bout winners for Air Force, as he took a decision from Juan Gonzales of UCLA in the 195-pound final.
Two additional Falcons also claimed regional titles without having to step into the ring. Junior Matt DeMars went unopposed at 112 pounds, while sophomore Mike McLain earned the 175-pound title by walkover, when his opponent was unable to make weight.
Four Falcons also advanced to the national championships by finishing second at the regional meet. Freshman Andrew Pineda finished second to Santa Clara's Ian Fletcher in the 119-pound regional championship, while senior Sam Sheppard dropped a 125-pound decision to Jerome Foster of UNLV. Sophomore Logan Brandt was decisioned by San Jose State's Charles Para and junior Mike Chambers fell by judges' vote to Brett Rather of UNLV in the heavyweight contest.
