SEATTLE, Wash. - Four members of the Air Force track and field team concluded competition at the Washington Final Qualifier on Saturday, March 6, at Dempsey Indoor in Seattle, Wash. Sophomore James Walmsley, who has hovered near the provisional mark for the 3000-meter run all season, finally broke the barrier, clocking a career-best 8:03.58.
Competing in an overall field of 31, Walmsley surged to a second-place finish - one of just two runners to break the 8:05.00 provisional barrier. Walmsley's time is not only a personal improvement by over five seconds, but it is the sixth-fastest time in Academy history. The mark is also a new Sophomore Class record, improving the mark Walmsley set earlier this season at the Husky Classic in mid-February.
The final three Air Force competitors recorded NCAA Provisional Marks earlier in the season, but looked to improve their rankings on the national best-marks list during today's Final Qualifier.
Senior Sara Neubauer, who finished third in the weight throw with a distance of 58'8", won the shot put with another provisional toss of 52'9¼". In fact, Neubauer bettered the field of throwers by over 16 feet with her next-to-last throw. Senior Nick Frawley matched his season-best clearance of 17'7¾" in the pole vault to tie for second, while freshman Chase Cooper tied for seventh with a height of 17'1¾".
The field for the upcoming national meet will be announced early next week. The 2010 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships will be held March 12-13 in Fayetteville, Ark.
