WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Air Force boxing team added another pair of national titles to its impressive legacy, as junior Matthew DeMars and senior Cory Tintzman won their respective title bouts during the finals of the National Collegiate Boxing Association (NCBA) National Championships on Saturday, April 10, in West Point, N.Y. Tonight's titles by the Falcons' captains count as the 103rd and 104th in the program's history.
DeMars successfully defended his 112-pound title by defeating Navy's Huy Troung in the first bout of the evening. Having byes throughout the Wing Open, regional rounds and first-two segments of the national championships, the bout was the first for DeMars since Jan 23. Despite the layoff, DeMars downed Troung to finish his junior campaign with a perfect 7-0 record.
Tintzman also completed a perfect season, finishing his senior year with a 9-0 record. Although Tintzman was facing Army's Tyler Elliott in the Black Knights' home venue, Tintzman took control of the 195-pound bout and defeated Elliott for the second time this season (Tintzman first took a decision from Elliott on Nov. 6). For his efforts tonight, Tintzman was named the Academy's Boxer of the Week.
RESULTS
112-lbs.: Matthew DeMars (Air Force) dec. Huy Troung (Navy)
