COLUMBUS, Ohio -
Playing in the third-annual "Showdown in the Shoe", the Air Force lacrosse team dropped a 10-6 contest to ECAC rival Ohio State Saturday afternoon at Ohio Stadium in front of a crowd of 31,078 fans.
Ohio State got out to a 2-0 start with a pair of goals in the first three minutes of the contest. The Falcons responded with their first goal of the game at the 6:27 mark in the opening period as junior Zack Carroll (Freehold Township, N.J.) found the back of the net.
Another score by Carroll less than a minute later tied the game at 2-2, but the Buckeyes regained the lead by scoring on their next possession. However, another Air Force goal, this time by Vinny Sandtorv (Jr., Centereach, N.Y.) tied the game at 3-3 going into the second period.
The Falcons took their first lead of the contest at the 10:30 mark in the second period with another score from Sandtorv, while Carroll added his third goal of the game with under five minutes left in the quarter to give Air Force a 5-3 advantage. However, the Buckeyes closed out the half with a pair of goals, including a score with just five seconds on the clock, to tie the game at 5-5.
Air Force regained the lead with the first goal of the third period, as freshman Paul Gaski (Fairfax, Va.) registered his first career score on a man-up opportunity at the 5:44 mark in the quarter. However, Ohio State went back on top with a pair of scores in the period and shut out Air Force in the fourth quarter to earn the 10-6 victory.
The Falcons are back in action next weekend, May 1, when they travel to Geneva, N.Y., to take on Hobart in an ECAC match-up.
