Air Force Earns Three Victories during NCBA Quarterfinals

WEST POINT, N.Y. - Three members of the Air Force boxing claimed victories during the opening round of the National Collegiate Boxing Association (NCBA) National Championships in West Point, N.Y., on Thursday, April 8. The Falcons, who posted a 3-4 record during the quarterfinal round of action, are currently in third-place after the first day.
In a quarterfinal for the 125-pound weight class, senior Same Sheppard opened the night for the Falcons with a victorious decision over Jefferson Bobo of the Coast Guard Academy. Classmate Bailey Ball followed with a decision over Lock Haven's Jaytron Charles in a 139-pound bout. Sophomore Mike McLain claimed another victory for the Falcons, as he defeated West Virginia's Cameron Price at 175 pounds.
Four other Falcons competed this evening, but lost their opening-round bout. Junior Michael Dunn lost his 147-pound decision to Army's Steve Escobar, while classmate Joe Silvio dropped a 156-pound contest to Nicholas Brown of Shippensburg. Sophomore Logan Brandt fell in the 185-pound bout with West Virginia's Zack Hulci, while junior Mike Chambers lost a heavyweight bout to Aaron Quattrocci, also of West Virginia.
Air Force is currently in third after the first night of competition. Navy currently leads the field in the team standings, while defending champion Army is in second.
Action continues at the NCBA National Championships tomorrow (Friday, April 9) with the semifinal round of competition. The Falcons will send eight boxers into the ring tomorrow night. Including the three winners from tonight's round, Matthew DeMars (112 pounds), Andrew Pineda (119), Mike Mizes (132), Dalton Hall (165) and Cory Tintzman (195) received byes into the semifinals.
