Air Force Opens Competition at MWC Championships

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Four members of the Air Force track and field team opened competition this afternoon (May 12) at the 2010 Mountain West Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Albuquerque, N.M. Freshman Michael Tibbs and senior Danielle McCarty are the Falcons' current leaders in the decathlon and heptathlon, respectively.
Tibbs, the lone Air Force competitor in the decathlon field, currently sits in sixth place with 3,325 points. His best event finish came in the shot put, as he placed fourth with a career-best 38'11½". He also posted a career-best 21'2½" to tie for fifth in the long jump, while placing seventh in the high jump with a clearance of 5'10½". On the track, Tibbs tallied personal-best times in both the 100-meter (11.49) and 400-meter (53.41) dashes.
On the women's side, McCarty is ranked seventh with 2,794 points. Her best finishes came in the high jump and 200-meter dash, as she earned fifth-place scores in both. McCarty matched her personal-best clearance in the high jump at 5'3¼", while setting a new mark of 26.69 in the 200-meter race. With a career-best time of 15.45, she finished sixth in the 100-meter hurdles and earned the same placement in the shot put with a season-best distance of 26.69.
Freshman Lesly Torres is just one spot behind McCarty with 2,587 points. Using career-best marks, Torres picked up a pair of eighth-place marks in the 100-meter hurdles (15.85) and high jump (5'2¼"). She also finished 10th in the 200-meter dash (career-best 27.30) and 11th in the shot put (29'1"). Sophomore Phaelen French rounds out the Falcons' competitors, as she sits in 10th with 2,235 points. French's best finish came in the shot put, where she tossed a career-best 32'5" to finish seventh. She also posted personal-best times in the 100-meter hurdles (17.59, 10th) and 200-meter dash (27.52, 11th), while finishing 11th in the high jump (4'7").
The Falcons' multi-event athletes conclude competition tomorrow (May 13) during the second day of competition at the MWC Championships. Action begins at noon, with the final five events of the decathlon. Heptathlon events are slated to begin at 12:30 at the Great Friends of UNM Track Stadium.
