Falcons Place 27 on Academic All-Conference List

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Air Force track and field program placed 27 cadet-athletes on the Mountain West Conference academic all-conference team, the league office announced this morning (June 29). With 18 selections, the men's team produced the most honorees of any of the Academy's 10 winter/spring sports, while the women's nine honorees were ranked third.
Four recently commissioned second lieutenants were named to the academic all-conference list, including all three of the team captains. Zach Nordahl highlighted the Class of 2010 with a 3.53 grade-point-average in civil engineering, while fellow captains Nick Frawley (3.13-systems engineering management) and Andy Schweitzer (3.11-management) also earned distinction by the MWC. Joel Nolan rounded out the senior class with a 3.49 GPA in behavioral sciences.
Three juniors and two sophomores were some of the 760 Mountain West Conference athletes to be named to the academic all-conference team. Chris Severino boasted the highest GPA of the Falcons' third-year runners, as he maintained a 3.56 GPA in civil engineering. Tyler Small (3.53-physics) and Tyler Stanley (3.06-management) were also honored by the league. Ryan Del Grosso (3.20-environmental engineering) and Jared Barkemeyer (3.03-management) represented the sophomore class.
Nine first-year Falcons made the academic all-conference list. Jeremy Drenckhahn and Ted Artz boasted the highest GPAs of any Air Force track and field athletes, with their respective 3.83 and 3.82 grade-point-averages in aeronautical engineering. Other freshmen academic all-conference selections were Zak Boston (3.18-mathematics), Chris Espinosa (3.15-civil engineering), Brian Ford (3.46-undeclared), Gage Owens (3.53-mechanical engineering), Andrew Quallio (3.32-undeclared), Michael Tibbs (3.00-astronautical engineering) and Uzor Udensi (3.36-biology).
On the women's side, four sophomores and five freshmen comprised the Falcons' academic all-conference selections.
All four sophomores - Paige Blackburn (3.31-civil engineering), Katie Carroll (3.29-electircal engineering), Kimber Shealy (3.67-history) and Jordyn Stoddard (3.58-physics) - earned their second consecutive selection to the academic all-conference list. Dominique Amor (3.30-undeclared), Jen Bremser (3.23-undeclared), Mary Bush (3.04-undeclared), Kate Kanetzky (3.73-undeclared) and Laura Young (3.10-biology) represented the Falcons' youngest class.
To be eligible for selection, student-athletes must have completed at least one academic term at the member institution while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better, and be a starter or significant contributor on their athletic team.
