USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - Air Force senior Brittany Morreale (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) and sophomore Kimber Shealy (Kennesaw, Ga.) were named to the 2010 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VII Team for track/field and cross country, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of American (CoSIDA). With today's release, Morreale was named to the first-team, while Shealy was selected as a second-team member.
With first-team status, Morreale will be on the national ballot for Academic All-America® status
Morreale, who also earned academic all-district honors in 2008, was the Academy's 11th cadet-athlete to be chosen as a Rhodes Scholar. She recently graduated with a 3.77 grade-point-average in physics, while Shealy concluded her sophomore season with a 3.66 GPA in history.
During the cross country season, Morreale competed in five meets, including a team-leading performance at the Colorado State Classic. She recorded the second-fastest time on the team at both the 5K (18:38.50) and 5.8K (23:27.00) distances.
Shealy moved into second on the program's all-time list in the pole vault during both the indoor (13'3½") and outdoor (12'9½") seasons. The pole vault champion at the Military Track and Field Championships, she scored for the Falcons in both the indoor and outdoor conference meets. A NCAA semifinalist at the outdoor championships, Shealy became just the second Air Force female to clear the 13-foot mark.
Shealy, who is in her first year of eligibility for the academic all-district award, was honored in 2009 as a member of the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic Team.
It is the fifth straight year that at least one member of the Air Force track and field team has earned Academic All-District status. The women's Academic All-America team will be announced on Thursday, June 24.
