EUGENE, Ore. - For the second straight year, Air Force thrower Sara Neubauer picked up a top-eight finish in the discus throw at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. During the first day of competition (Wednesday, June 9) at a rainy Historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., Neubauer used a toss of 172'9" to place seventh in the 24-member competition.
Neubauer opened the meet with a throw of 156'3", before upping that mark to 165'2" on her second attempt. During her third throw of the event trials, Neubauer improved her distance once more, recording a throw of 172'9". That throw moved Neubauer from ninth to fifth in the overall standings, as the top nine throwers advanced to the event finals and earned an additional three attempts.
While the rain had deminished during the event trials, it returned during the finals. After fouling off her first attempt, Neubauer recorded a distance of 171'2". Like six of the nine finalists throwing in the increasing rain, Neubauer recorded a foul mark on her last attempt.
However, it was her third attempt - the mark of 172'9" - that gave Neubauer the third All-America award of her career.
Southern Illinois' Jeneva McCall won the national title with a distance of 180'4",
Senior Ally Romanko concluded her collegiate career with a 19th-place finish in the national semifinals of the 800-meter run. Placing sixth in the second heat of runners, Romanko clocked a time of 2:09.89. The top two finishers from each of the three heats, as well as the next two fastest times, advanced to the finals on Friday. Competing against four other Mountain West Conference runners, Romanko recorded the third fastest time, while beating the defending conference champion.
Action continues at the NCAA Outdoor Championships tomorrow (June 10) in Eugene, Ore. Senior Nick Frawley will compete in the finals of the men's pole vault, beginning at 4 p.m. (PST). Neubauer will return to the field on Friday, June 11, when she competes in the finals of the shot put.
