Falcons Head to California For Two Games
The Air Force Falcons travel to the West Coast this weekend for a pair of games in California. The Falcons (2-4) take on UC Riverside on Friday, Sept. 24 at 6 p.m., then Cal State Northridge on Sunday, Sept. 26 at 1 p.m. UC Riverside enters the weekend with a 2-4 record, while Cal State Northridge is 0-5-1 entering its game at San Francisco on Friday.
Air Force Splits Home Games Last Weekend
The Falcons split a pair of games this past weekend at Cadet Soccer Stadium. On Friday, 23rd-ranked Penn State used a goal in each half to down Air Force, 2-0. Mark Fetrow and Corey Hertzog scored for the Nittany Lions, who improved to 4-1.
Penn State finished the game with a 15-11 advantage in total shots and 6-3 in shots on goal. Sophomore Matt Underwood made four saves for AFA.
On Sunday, the Falcons scored a season-high four goals in a 4-0 rout of Oral Roberts. Senior Kyle Moses and freshman Brian Klazura each had a goal and an assist for AFA. It was Klazura's first goal of his career. Junior Ben Chavez and sophomore Kevin Durr also scored for the Falcons.
Underwood made two saves before leaving the game after Klazura's goal in the 68th minute. Senior Patrick Gould took over and, just over a minute later, saved a penalty kick off the foot of ORU's Jarrett Hamilton. It was one of three saves for Gould.
Snapped Three-Game Scoreless Skid
Air Force's 4-0 victory over Oral Roberts on Sunday snapped a three-game losing streak, during which the Falcons did not score a goal. In fact, Air Force went nearly 282 minutes without scoring before Kevin Durr notched his first goal of the season in the 12th minute against ORU last Sunday.
Underwood's Up There in Saves
Sophomore keeper Matt Underwood is second in the MPSF in saves with 26 and fourth with a .743 saves percentage. Underwood, who earned his first career start in the season opener against Houston Baptist, has a 1.54 goals-against average, good for fifth in the conference.
Falcons Lead The League in Shots
Despite scoring just six goals in its first six games, Air Force leads the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation with 101 shots taken. UNLV is second with 100 shots. Unfortunately, only 30 of AFA's 101 shots have been on goal.
Individually, sophomore Kevin Durr continues to lead the conference with 22 total shots. Junior John Melcher leads the team with seven shots on goal, followed by Durr with six and sophomore Zane Dydasco with four.
Series vs. Opponents
The Falcons have played UC Riverside just once in the past, a 1-0 AFA victory on Sept. 2, 2001 at the Fila Cup in Los Angeles, Calif. Air Force is 1-1 against Cal State Northridge, losing to the Matadors, 1-0 in overtime, on Nov. 5, 1993 at the MPSF playoffs, and winning 2-0 on Nov. 1, 1996 in Northridge.
