Falcons Set to Begin Season with Blue and Silver Open

The Air Force track and field team opens the 2011-12 season this Friday (Dec. 9), as it hosts the first-annual Blue and Silver Open at the Academy's Cadet Field House. Action begins at 3:00 p.m., with the men's weight throw.

MEET INFORMATION
The Blue and Silver Open gets underway at 3:00 p.m., with the first of four throwing events. The men's pole vault, men's and women's long jump and women's high jump are scheduled to begin at 4 p.m., with the women's pole vault, men's and women's triple jump and men's high jump following. The running events, which will run on a rolling schedule, will start at 4 p.m., with the women's mile run.

WHO'S BACK
The Falcons' indoor roster includes two Academy record holders (weight throw: Rob Drye; 1000-meter run: Morgan Mosby) and seven all-conference athletes (2011: Drye, Cale Simmons, Michael Tibbs, Jim Walmsley; 2010: Chase Cooper, Uzor Udensi, Zach Wood). In addition, the roster also includes two members of the All-American distance medley relay team (Anthony Delgado, Nick White) and two of the four runners that claimed the program's first conference title in the 4x400-meter relay (Delgado, Manny Smith).
WE'LL BE SEEING YOU
The Blue and Silver Open will be the first of five home competitions for the Falcons during the indoor season. In 2012, the Falcons will host the Air Force All-Comers Meet (Jan. 13), Air Force Indoor Combined Events Meet (Jan. 26-27), Air Force Team Challenge (Jan. 28) and the Air Force Invitational (Feb. 10-11).
LEADING THE WAY
Eight Falcons will serve as captains of the 2011-12 Air Force track and field team. Bryce Bergman, Rob Drye, Jim Walmsley and Alex Zubey will represent the men's team, while Paige Blackburn, Emily Cotharn, Auriele Fain and Kimber Shealy will captain the women's squad.
NEW FACE ON THE SIDELINE
Air Force added 1996 Olympic gold medalist Allen Johnson to its coaching staff for the 2011-12 season. Johnson, who will coach the Falcons' sprint and hurdle athletes, won the 110-meter hurdles at the Atlanta Games. He also claimed gold medals in that event at seven IAAF World Outdoor Championship meets and in the 60-meter hurdles at three indoor world championships. Johnson will be joined on the coaching staff by head coach Ralph Lindeman, associate head coach Scott Irving and assistant coaches Juli Benson and Scott Steffan.
