Lesly Torres Nets Career-Best Total at MWC Pentathlon

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - With a career-best 3190 points, Air Force sophomore Lesly Torres finished eighth in the pentathlon at the Mountain West Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships on Thursday, Feb. 24, in Albuquerque, N.M. In addition to recording a scoring finish for the Falcons, Torres moved into fifth on the program's all-time list. Junior Phaelen French placed 12th in the five-event meet with a season-best 2911 points.

Torres best placement of the day came in the high jump, where she tied for third with a clearance of 5'4½". She also finished eighth in the long jump (16'9 ¾"), ninth in both the 60-meter hurdles (9.46) and shot put (30'10½") and 13th in the 800-meter run (2:45.78). In addition to accounting for a career-best total, Torres also set personal-best event marks in the 60-meter hurdles and 800-meter run, while matching her best-ever distance in the shot put.

French won the pentathlon's 800-meter run behind a time of 2:27.70, while placing seventh in the shot put with a career-long distance of 32'6½". French also finished 12th in the high jump (season-best 4'9½"), 13th in the long jump (15'2¼") and 15th in the 60-meter hurdles (season-best 10.47), en route her season-best total.

The first four events of the men's heptathlon were also contested today. Sophomore Michael Tibbs currently sits in fifth place with 2776 points, while senior Noah Palicia is sixth with 2754 points. Sophomore James Dills rounds out the squad's multi-event athletes, as he is currently in ninth with 2681 points.

Tibbs' best finish of the first day came in the shot put, where he tossed a career-long 40'7¾" to finish third. The sophomore, who is just three points out of fourth place in the combined scoring, also placed fifth in the 60-meter dash (career-best 7.31), sixth in the long jump (career-best 21'9") and tied for seventh in the high jump (5'11½").

Palicia cleared a personal-best 6'4¼" to finish third in the high jump, while placing fourth in the 60-meter dash (career-best 7.31), sixth in the shot put (38'5") and ninth in the long jump (20'6¼"). Dills, competing in his first conference championship heptathlon, posted a sixth-place time of 7.34 in the 60-meter dash, as well as seventh-place marks in both the shot put (37'3¾") and high jump (5'11½") and an eighth-place distance of 21'5¼" in the long jump.

The Falcons return to action tomorrow (Friday, Feb. 26) with the conclusion of the heptathlon and the start of the individual events. The heptathlon begins at 11 a.m., while the individual field events get underway at 1 p.m., and the races are scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m.
