USAFA, Colo. -
Unable to overcome a 40-minute scoreless drought, the Air Force lacrosse team dropped a 9-6 decision to Vermont on a cold, foggy Friday evening in Falcon Stadium.
The Falcons (0-2) were the first to strike, as senior captain Vinny Sandtorv (Centereach, N.Y.) tallied a man-up goal, his third of the year, at the 8:48 mark in the opening period. Just over a minute later, Air Force's lead increased to 2-0 with a score by Adam Paranka (Jr., Denver, Colo.), but Vermont (2-0) notched a man-up goal of their own with just over six minutes to play in the opening period to get back within one point.
Less than a minute later, Air Force got on the board once more, as Erik Smith (Fr., Golden, Colo.) scored on the assist from Zack Carroll (Sr., Freehold Township, N.J.). However, the Catamounts closed out the quarter with two unanswered goals to tie the score after one period.
Air Force's offense stalled over the next two periods, as the Falcons were outscored 4-0. Leading 7-3 going into the final stanza, Vermont scored another man-up goal in the opening seconds of the period to increase their advantage to four goals.
A score by freshman Mike Crampton (Kinnelon, N.J.) with just over 10 minutes to play ignited an Air Force rally, as the Falcons were able to cut their margin to 8-6. However, Air Force could not find the back of the net again, while the Catamounts tacked on a final goal with just 22 seconds remaining to take the 9-6 victory.
Smith and Paranka each scored two goals and an assist to lead the Falcons, while Crampton tallied a goal and an assist. For the Catamounts, Ahmad Zachary led the way with two goals and an assist.
The Falcons return to action next weekend, March 5-6, at the Pioneer Face-Off Classic, hosted by Denver. Air Force will take on Manhattan in Saturday's game, while facing Jacksonville on Sunday.
