FAIRFIELD, Conn. -
Giving up four unanswered scores, the Air Force lacrosse team dropped a 6-4 decision to Fairfield Friday evening in its 2011 ECAC opener.
The Falcons (1-4, 0-1 ECAC) took a 4-2 lead with 7:27 remaining in the third period, but the Stags cut into the margin with a goal less than two minutes later. In the final stanza, Fairfield (3-2, 1-0) scored three goals while keeping Air Force off the board to earn the two-goal victory.
After a scoreless opening period, Air Force was the first to register a goal, with senior Vinny Sandtorv (Centereach, N.Y.) finding the back of the net early in the second period. Nearly nine minutes went by before the Stags responded to tie the game at 1-1. However, Air Force went into the intermission with a 2-1 advantage, thanks to the first career goal from freshman Jacob Podolnick (Flanders, N.J.).
Fairfield tied the game once more with the first goal of the third period, but back-to-back scores from Sandtorv and Mike Crampton (Fr., Kinnelon, N.J.) put the Falcons back on top before the Stags' game-ending run.
The Stags, who outshot the Falcons 12-3 in the final period, finished with a 31-26 edge on shots taken in the game and committed eight fewer turnovers. Face-offs were even for the game, with both teams winning 7-of-14 draws.
The Falcons have a short turnaround before their next game, as they travel to Hempstead, N.Y., on Sunday to face fourth-ranked Hofstra.
