Paige Blackburn Wins Discus Throw at Stanford Invitational

PALO ALTO, Calif. - Air Force junior Paige Blackburn accounted for the third-farthest discus throw in Academy history on Saturday, March 26, to win the collegiate event title at the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif. With a toss of 160'4", Blackburn was one of three Falcons to impact the women's top-10 list during the second day of competition at Stanford.
Competing in the collegiate discus throw, Blackburn improved her personal distance by seven feet to win the event at 160'4". That throw, which was six feet better than the field, is the third-best toss in program history. Senior Christina Burke also finished among the top 10 in the discus throw, placing 10th with a mark of 138'7".
Sophomore Morgan Mosby shaved over one second off of her career-best time in the 800-meter run to move into seventh on the program's all-time list. Mosby crossed the finish line in a time of 2:13.11 to finish 36th in the 81-runner race. In addition, the women's 4x400-meter relay team combined for a time of 3:55.45, which is the 10th-best time in Academy history.
Air Force earned eight additional finishes among the meet's top 15, including multiple spots in the men's shot put and women's pole vault. Juniors Robert Drye and Sean Herbison finished fourth and sixth, respectively, in the collegiate shot put, while classmate Kyle Schwochow finished 11th in the invitational division. Drye placed fourth in the collegiate field with a toss of 50'11½", while Herbison's 50'9¼" was ranked sixth. In the invitational field, Schwochow recorded a team-best 51'0¼" to place 11th. Fellow juniors Tawny Lambuth and Kimber Shealy finished 10th (11'11¾") and 15th (11'5¾"), respectively, in the pole vault. Drye also earned a fifth-place finish in the invitational field of the hammer throw, as he tossed a 191'11".
The men's 4x400-meter relay team clocked a time of 3:14.05 to place third in the 18-team race, while freshman Kassie Gurnell finished fourth in the triple jump with a career-best 37'0¼".
Air Force will split up for competition over the March 31-April 2 weekend. The Falcons' multi-event athletes will compete in their first decathlon and heptathlon of the outdoor season at the New Mexico Combined Events Meet on March 31-April 1. The remainder of the team will meet then in Albuquerque, N.M., on April 2, for the New Mexico Invitational. In addition, select athletes will travel to Austin, Texas, for the annual Texas Relays.
