Tawny Lambuth Wins Pole Vault at Sun Angel Classic

TEMPE, Ariz. - Air Force junior Tawny Lambuth won the pole vault with a career-best height of 12'6", as the track and field team opened competition at the 32nd Sun Angel Classic in Tempe, Ariz., on Friday, April 8. With seven members of the hammer throw and pole vault squads to compete at Sun Angel Stadium, Lambuth was one of four top-six finishes by the Falcons.
Lambuth won the unseeded pole vault with a personal-best clearance of 12'6", while sophomore Bizzy Mellado finished sixth with a height of 11'6¼". With that mark, Lambuth recorded the fifth-best clearance in program history and is now just ¾" behind Mellado's fourth-place height.
Sophomore Cale Simmons tied with former Falcon standout Nick Frawley, now a member of the Air Force World Class Athlete Program, for third in the men's seeded pole vault. The duo cleared 16'6", which was the second-best mark of the day. Simmons finished second among collegiate vaulters.
Junior Robert Drye finished fifth in the premier section of the hammer throw with a distance of 200'11", while classmates Sean Herbison and James Cole finished 19th (career-best 167'7") and 21st (155'0"), respectively, in the collegiate/open section of the hammer throw.
One the women's side, junior Paige Blackburn tossed a career-best 162'2" to finish 17th in the meet and move into eighth on the program's all-time list.
The rest of the Sun Angel Classic opens competition tomorrow (April 9) in Tempe, Ariz. In addition, Air Force will also compete at the Colorado Invitational in Boulder.
