FORT COLLINS, Colo. - Air Force sophomore Michael Tibbs is in third place after the first five events of the decathlon at the 2011 Mountain West Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Fort Collins, Colo. Highlighted by two career-best marks and a pair of top-three finishes, Tibbs accumulated 3,506 points to sit in third after the first day of competition.
Tibbs' best finish of the day came in the high jump, where he cleared a career-best 6'4" to tie for second. Due to cold and wet conditions in Fort Collins, the high jump was moved indoors to the Glenn Morris Fieldhouse. He also placed third in the shot put (38'5") and fourth in the 400-meter dash (career-best 52.82), while finishing sixth in the long jump (21'4") and seventh in the 100-meter dash (11.32).
The first day of action featured a tight race for the conference's decathlon title, as only 369 points separate the top five competitors and only 626 points split the top eight. New Mexico's Richard York is currently in the lead with 3,776 points, while BYU's Phillip Bettis is second with 3,585 points. Tibbs, who climbed from seventh to third during the first day, holds a two-point advantage over New Mexico's Sam Potter (3,504 points). Josh McMillin of Colorado State rounds out the top five with 3,407 points.
The decathlon concludes tomorrow (May 12) at 12:30 p.m., in Fort Collins, Colo.
