CENTERVILLE, Mass. -
Two Air Force lacrosse players were selected to the All-ECAC team, as voted on by the league's coaches and announced on Tuesday afternoon. Senior Vinny Sandtorv and junior Dayton Gilbreath were each named second-team all-conference honorees.
Sandtorv, a native of Centereach, N.Y., earned second-team All-ECAC honors as a midfielder for the second-straight season. Sandtorv, who started all 13 games for the Falcons playing at attack and midfield, finished the season with a team- and career-best 33 points, including a team- and career-high 27 goals. Sandtorv also posted career-high numbers in assists (six), ground balls (24) and man-up goals (seven), leading the Falcons in the latter category.
Meanwhile, Gilbreath earns all-conference honors for the third year, after earning All-GWLL honors as a freshman and All-ECAC accolades in his sophomore year. The native of Bainbridge Island, Wash., has started every game for the Falcons at close defense this season, responsible for shutting down his opponents' top scorer. This season, he registered a career-best 30 ground balls, while also finishing second on the team in caused turnovers with 14.
League champion Denver led the way with four first-team All-ECAC picks and seven overall selections, while Fairfield and Ohio State each had two first-team selections and four overall honorees. Loyola placed three players on All-ECAC teams, while Air Force and Hobart each had two all-conference honorees.
In addition to announcing the all-league first and second teams, the ECAC's individual awards were released Tuesday as well. Denver's Bill Tierney garnered Coach of the Year honors for the second-straight season, guiding the Pioneers to another perfect ECAC record and an 11-2 overall mark. Two Denver players also earned individual awards, with junior Mark Matthews earning Offensive Player of the Year honors, while freshman goalkeeper Jamie Faus was named Rookie of the Year.
