Justin Tyner Wraps Up Collegiate Career at USATF Championships

EUGENE, Ore. - Four-time Air Force All-American Justin Tyner concluded his successful collegiate career this afternoon (June 25), as he placed 14th in the finals of the 3000-meter steeplechase at the 2011 USA Track and Field Outdoor National Championships at Historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. Tyner was one of three members of the Falcon program to compete during the third day of competition.
In addition to Tyner's 14th-place finish in the steeplechase, former standout Dana Pounds-Lyon placed sixth in the javelin throw, while volunteer coach Jenny Simpson was the runner-up in the 1500-meter run.
Competing in his first U.S. national championship meet, Tyner finished 14th in the national final of the steeplechase. The recently commissioned second lieutenant, who placed 13th during Thursday's semifinal round, clocked a time of 8:57.94 in the finals.
Pounds-Lyon, the 2007 U.S. national champion and a two-time NCAA champion, finished sixth in the javelin throw with a toss of 171'10". The 2006 graduate, representing the Air Force World Class Athlete Program (WCAP) and Nike, opened the day with a foul throw, but quickly regrouped to toss her best throw of the competition at 171'10". After fouling off her next two attempts, she concluded the day with throws of 167'4" and 159'5".
Simpson, a volunteer coach who trains with Air Force distance coach Juli Benson, earned a spot on the U.S. National Team after placing second in the 1500-meter run with a time of 4:05.66. With her runner-up finish, Simpson will represent the U.S. at the 2011 World Championships on Aug. 27-Sept. 4 in Daegu, South Korea.
