Falcons Fall to UC Davis in Three

DAVIS, Calif. - The Air Force volleyball team dropped a 3-0 match to UC Davis on Saturday, Sept. 17, during the second day of action at the Aggie Invitational in Davis, Calif. The Aggies, who are 13-1 on the year, defeated the Falcons (3-9) in straight 25-15, 25-20, 25-14 sets at The Pavilion.
Freshman Emma Dridge opened the scoring with her 12th service ace of the season. A kill from sophomore Cami Richan evened the score at three, while a pair of kills from classmate Claire Bieber matched the score at six. UC Davis took the next three points to go up 9-6. Freshman Ayesha Hein added a kill, but the Aggies doubled up the Falcons by a 16-8 mark. A kill from Richan halted UC Davis' 5-0 run and freshman Kristen Holt added a pair of kills. Classmate Brooke Pottle connected for a strike and Hein added another, but Air Force fell by a 25-16 score.
UC Davis struck first in the second set, but kills from Hein and freshman Lizzy Carpenter kept the score tied at two. Hein added another kill, while Carpenter and Holt teamed up for a block in the opening minutes. A service ace from junior Maiya Perich kept the score even at seven and a kill from freshman Megan Clary matched the score at eight. The Aggies scored 10 of the next 11 points to take an 18-9 advantage on the Falcons. Hein stopped their run with a kill and Air Force rolled off three straight points behind a kill (Richan), block (Carpenter, Hein) and a service ace (sophomore Josalynn Wise). Air Force pulled within four (20-16) following a kill from Carpenter. Clary added another kill, but the Aggies went to set point at 24-17. The Falcons refused to go down, holding the Aggies scoreless while collecting three straight points, including another kill from Carpenter and a block from Holt and freshman Hillary Keltner. UC Davis ultimately got the final point, winning the second set 25-20.
The Aggies jumped out to a quick 6-1 lead to start the third set, with a block from Carpenter and Hein breaking up UC Davis' opening run. A kill from Richan brought the Falcons within three (6-3) and a block from Holt and Richan kept the Falcons within four (10-6). UC Davis used a 5-1 run to go up 15-7, before Clary and Hein added kills. Richan posted a kill and teamed up with Holt for another block, but the Falcons fell by a 25-14 score.
Richan and Hein led the Falcons with six kills apiece, while Holt paced the squad with four blocks (all assisted). Dridge, Perich and Wise all tallied service aces, while Perich reached the 20-dig mark for the third time this season. Keltner collected a team-leading 13 assists.
Air Force returns to action this afternoon, when it concludes action at the Aggie Invitational against Hofstra at 4:30 p.m.
