Falcons Open Spring Semester with 10 Friday Night Bouts

USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - With several new faces in the Friday Night Fights lineup, the Air Force boxing team opened the spring semester with 10 contests on Jan. 13. Chris Nelson was named the Academy's Boxer of the Week.
Moving well and controlling the ring, Nelson used a good straight right in a hard-fought 171-pound win over Aaron Wurster. Also competing in the upper weight divisions were Derek Demyanek, who won a 185-pound bout with newcomer Nate Landecker, and Ty Perich, who took the decision over Cameron Vickroy in the 197-pound bout.
In the night's lightest weight class, Mike Magtalas decisioned Vincente Vasquez at 131 pounds. As the faster boxer, Magtalas was able to land combinations on the hard-charging Vasquez. Three other bouts were contested within 10 pounds of the Magtalas-Vasquez bout. Stephen Bittner defeated Julian Gluck in the 136-pound bout, while Roy Taylor used constant pressure and a reach advantage to decision Gerlad Lara in the 136-pound bout. At 141 pounds, Ethan Salgado claimed the only victory that ended before the final bell, as he forced the referee to stop his bout with Miguel Martinez in the second round.
Jose Rodriguez won his 158-pound bout with Alex Kim, while Connor Crawford defeated Jonathan Monslave in the 165-pound contest. Jose Rodriguez closed out the night with a 158-pound victory over Alex Kim.
Air Force returns to action next weekend, when it hosts another round of Friday Night Fights on Jan. 20.
