THIS WEEK

The Air Force men's tennis team opens its 2012 spring season this weekend with a pair of matches on Saturday at the Academy. The Falcons will face the University of Northern Colorado at 10 a.m. and CSU-Pueblo at 2 p.m. Both matches will be played on the indoor tennis courts inside the Cadet Gymnasium.

AIR FORCE HEAD COACH DAN OOSTERHOUS

Air Force head coach Dan Oosterhous is in his third season as the men's tennis coach after being named the program's 12th head coach on October 1, 2009. Oosterhous, a 1993 graduate of the Academy, replaced legendary head coach Rich Gugat, who retired after 36 years at the helm of the men's tennis program.

Oosterhous led the Falcons to a 10-14 record last season and enters the 2012 campaign with a 20-27 career mark. Last season, he coached the Falcons to a 6-1 victory over service-academy rival Army and Lance Wilhelm and Andy Jackson to a No. 7 doubles ranking in the Mountain Region.

FALL RECAP

The Falcons played in three tournaments during the 2011 fall season. Junior Lance Wilhelm led the squad with a 7-3 singles record, including four straight wins en route to winning the "A" flight title at the New Mexico Balloon Fiesta Classic. Wilhelm is currently ranked No. 17 in the Mountain Region entering the spring season. Sophomore Alex Grubbs, who posted a 6-2 record in the fall, captured the "B" flight title at Balloon Fiesta Classic.

In doubles, Wilhelm and freshman Grant Taylor advanced to the finals of the Balloon Classic before falling to Ben Dunbar and James Hignett of New Mexico, 8-2. Wilhelm and Taylor won a team-high four doubles matches during the fall.

UP NEXT

Air Force travels to Wichita, Kan., next weekend for a pair of matches. On Saturday, Jan. 28, the Falcons will face Texas-San Antonio at 10 a.m., then will play Wichita State on Sunday, Jan. 29 at 10 a.m.
