USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - With 16 evenly-matched bouts, the Air Force boxing team produced its largest card of the year during the final round Friday Nights Fights on Jan. 20. Glenn Miltenberg was selected the Academy's Boxer of the Week.
Miltenberg and Craig Spranger stepped into the ring for the second time this season, competing in a 152-pound contest. The two fighters battled for six straight minutes, in what the coaches called "an excellent display of boxing". Although the scorecards were close, Miltenberg claimed a unanimous decision to defeat Spranger for the second time this season.
Several seniors claimed victories in the final Friday Fights before the start of the Wing Open Tournament. Mike McLain, boxing up in weight, landed good combinations to earn a 195-pound decision over Zac Spranger, while Casey Habluetzel used strong counterpunching and excellent movement to defeat Denis Vorobyov in a 173-pound decision. Tyrus Korecki used speed and strong punches to earn a decisive victory in a 160-pound bout with Nolan Hebein.
Andrew Pineda, the defending NCBA champion at 112 pounds, also moved up in weight on Friday night, competing in a 128-pound bout with Stephen Bittner. Pineda handed Bittner his first loss of the year, as he was able to get inside and score points with well-place shots.
Justin Zahn earned a decision over Vincente Vasquez at 124 pounds, while, in the two heaviest bouts, Nick Wawrzyniak defeated Andrew Zaldivar by decision in the 234-pound bout and Wale Lawal earned a decision over Joseph Okai in a heavyweight battle.
Also claiming decisions on Friday night were Roy Taylor (130 pounds, vs. Mike Magtalas), Andrew Munoz (137 pounds, vs. Julian Gluck), Will Petersen (140 pounds, vs. Ethan Salgado), Blaze Dunn (163 pounds, vs. Mike Leland), Zigmas Polinauskas (167 pounds, vs. Brandon Pitts) and Chris Nelson (178 pounds, vs. Derek Demyanek).
Only two bouts ended before the final bell, as a pair of third-round referee-stopped-contests bookended the night's bouts. Clayton Elliott defeated TJ Rowland in a 170-pound bout to open the night, while Juan Jose Rodriguez took a victory over Connor Crawford at 157 pounds.
Air Force heads out on the road next weekend, traveling to Seattle, Wash., for an NCBA Showcase at the Washington Athletic Club on Saturday, Jan. 28.
