Falcons Host Three Matches This Week

THIS WEEKAir Force hosts three matches this week at the Academy. The Falcons will play former Mountain West opponent Utah on Monday, March 12 at 10 a.m., South Dakota State on Wednesday, March 14 at 4 p.m. and St. Louis University on Thursday, March 15 at 4 p.m. AIR FORCE HEAD COACH DAN OOSTERHOUSAir Force head coach Dan Oosterhous is in his third season as the men's tennis coach after being named the program's 12th head coach on October 1, 2009. Oosterhous, a 1993 graduate of the Academy, replaced legendary head coach Rich Gugat, who retired after 36 years at the helm of the men's tennis program.Oosterhous led the Falcons to a 10-14 record last season and has a 26-34 career mark. Last season, he coached the Falcons to a 6-1 victory over service-academy rival Army and Lance Wilhelm and Andy Jackson to a No. 7 doubles ranking in the Mountain Region. Wilhelm is currently ranked 17th in the Mountain Region in singles. LAST TIME OUTThe Falcons men's tennis team snapped a five-match losing streak with an impressive 4-3 win over New Mexico State last Thursday in Las Cruces, N.M. The Aggies took a 1-0 lead after winning two of the three doubles matches.The Falcons stormed back to win four of the singles contests. Sophomore Alex Grubbs gave Air Force its first point with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Germain Degardin at the No. 4 spot. Down 3-1, sophomore Alex Lineberry started the comeback with a 7-6, 6-3 over Patrick Pfister at No. 5 and junior Lance Wilhelm pulled out an impressive 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 win over Matej Stakne, who is currently ranked 15th in the Mountain Region, setting up the deciding match at No. 6. Junior Steven Young clinched the match for the Falcons with a 6-1, 1-6, 7-6 win over Felipe Frattini.On Friday, the Falcons dropped to 0-2 in the Mountain West with a 7-0 loss to New Mexico. Wilhelm and freshman Grant Taylor won the No. 1 doubles match and Wilhelm lost 12-10 in a third-set super-tiebreak at No. 1 singles. UNM won the other five singles matches in straight sets.
