JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Freshman Keith Dreyer (Malvern, Pa.) scored a career-high four goals to lead the Air Force lacrosse team in an 11-8 victory over Jacksonville Tuesday evening at The Bolles School.
Sophomore Tommy McKee (Holt, Mich.) registered his second hat trick of the season, while long-stick midfielder Kyle O'Brien (Fr., Denver, Colo.) added a game-high two assists. Meanwhile, Ari Waffle and Max Gurowski tallied two goals each to lead the Dolphins' offense.
Jacksonville (4-5) was first to score, finding the back of the net at the 9:40 mark in the opening period, but McKee put the Falcons on the board with a goal 32 seconds later. After the Dolphins regained the lead with another score, Dreyer tallied his first goal of the game with just over three minutes left in the first quarter to tie the game at 2-2 going into the second stanza.
Sophomore Mike Crampton (Kinnelon, N.J.) gave Air Force its first lead of the game with a goal just over a minute into the second quarter, while McKee and Dreyer added back-to-back scores, both assisted by O'Brien, in less than 30 seconds, to push the Falcons' advantage to 5-2. However, Jacksonville scored the last two goals of the period, including a man-up score from Waffle, to go into the locker room trailing by just one goal.
After the break, the Dolphins tied the score once more with a tally at the 10:39 mark in the third quarter, but McKee put Air Force back on top with another quick goal. Midway through the period, Dreyer registered a pair of goals just six seconds apart, while the Falcons added two more scores in the last 40 seconds of the quarter to take a 10-5 advantage.
While Jacksonville outscored Air Force 3-1 in the fourth period, including a pair of goals in the final minute of action, it was not enough to overcome the Falcons' third-quarter scoring flurry.
Air Force (4-4, 0-2) performed well at the face-off X, winning 14-of-22, including 13-of-20 by sophomore Bryan Price (Denver, Colo.), who picked up a career-high 11 ground balls. O'Brien picked up six ground balls and caused three turnovers, while junior goalkeeper Austin Fox (Webster, N.Y.) had a solid performance between the pipes, with 11 saves and seven goals against.
"Keith Dreyer and Kyle O'Brien had great games for us," said Air Force head coach Eric Seremet. "We did a much better job this game at the face-off X; Bryan Price is getting better each week and really stepped up tonight. We knew Jacksonville could be dangerous, but we used a lot of bodies tonight and had a team effort. "
The Falcons return home this weekend, Saturday, March 31, for a non-conference game versus Mercer. The contest is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. in Falcon Stadium.
