Air Force Vaulters Wrap up Competition at NCAA Championships

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Two members of the Air Force pole vault team wrapped up competition at the 2013 NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships this evening in Fayetteville, Ark. Senior Cale Simmons finished 10th with a clearance of 17'8½", while sophomore Joey Uhle placed 14th with a height of 17'4½".

Simmons passed on the opening height of 17'0¾" and entered the meet with the bar at 17'4½". Easily clearing that height on his first attempt, he was one of eight athletes to advance on their first chance at that mark. He cleared the 17'8½" bar on his second attempt, but was unable to advance out of the 17'10½" round. Simmons, one of three vaulters to go out at that height, finished the meet in 10th.

Uhle entered the meet on the opening height, bettering the 17'0¾" bar on his second attempt. Like Simmons, he easily advanced out of the 17'4½" round on his first vault. Uhle, who narrowly missed his second attempt at the 17'8½" bar, exited the competition during that round to finish 14th overall.

Arkansas sophomore Andrew Irwin won his second straight NCAA title in the indoor pole vault with a collegiate-leading clearance of 18'8¼". Oral Roberts senior Jack Whitt finished second with a mark of 18'4½", while Mississippi sophomore Sam Kendricks and Tennessee freshman Jake Blankenship used that same clearance to finish third and fourth, respectively. The top seven vaulters all surpassed the 18-foot bar, as the fifth-, sixth- and seven-place finishers all cleared matching marks of 18'0½".

With the indoor season concluding this weekend, Air Force opens the outdoor season next weekend (March 15-16) at the Jerry Quiller Classic in Boulder.
