COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - After winning the pole vault with the nation's best clearance, Air Force junior Dylan Bell (Alvarado, Texas) was named the Mountain West Men's Indoor Field Athlete of the Week on Tuesday, Dec. 16. It is the third such honor for Bell, as he also received the weekly MW award as a freshman and as a sophomore.
Improving his indoor pole vault clearance by five inches during last Friday's Air Force Holiday Open, Bell won the event with a career-best and meet-record clearance of 18'0½". Clearing that height on his first attempt, Bell became the fifth vaulter in Air Force history to break the 18-foot bar in indoor competition.
The junior was one of two Falcons to record career-best clearances of 18'0½" during the year's first meet, as senior Joey Uhle cleared that bar two attempts later. That clearance, the best in the nation (all divisions) so far this season, is ranked sixth on the conference's all-time list.
Bell shared the season's first weekly award of the 2014-15 campaign with Wyoming's Harry Fisher (men's track athlete), Boise State's Marisa Howard (women's track athlete) and Wyoming's Shreese Daniels (women's field athlete).
The Falcons return to competition on Friday, Jan. 9, when they host the Air Force Collegiate Open at the Academy's Cadet Field House Indoor Track.
