AMES, Iowa - Highlighted by two incursions into the program's all-time list, eight runners from the Air Force track and field team opened competition at the Iowa State Classic on Friday, Feb. 14. With the Academy's fifth-fastest distance medley relay and 10th-fastest 5000-meter run, the Falcons got off to a strong start at the Lied Recreation Center in Ames, Iowa.
The men's distance medley relay team of sophomore Patrick Corona, junior Jake Spuller, freshman Matt Dorsey and junior Zach Perkins finished seventh with a time of 9:43.39 - the fifth-fastest mark in Academy history. In the quartet's first race together, they became the fourth DMR squad in as many years to impact the program's all-time top-five.
With a 5000-meter time of 14:13.03, junior Elliot Myers added his name to the Academy record book, as he recorded the 10th-fastest time in Academy history. In his indoor debut at that distance, Myers finished 17th among collegiate runners (19th overall) in the 41-competitor field. Senior Isaiah Bragg cut nearly nine seconds off of his previous best time (14:14.46) to finish 21st overall with the 11th-fastest time in Air Force history, while junior Riley Coates placed 27th with a time of 14:28.88 - a personal improvement of nearly one minute.
Prior to running his leg of the distance medley relay, Spuller competed in the 200-meter dash. With a time of 22.19, the junior finished 14th in the 27-runner field.
Seven Falcons, including Corona, Dorsey and Perkins, wrap up action at the Iowa State Classic tomorrow (Feb. 15), while the rest of the track and field team hosts the Air Force Collegiate Open at the Academy's Cadet Field House.
