Senior Kyle Westmoreland shot a final round 69 Tuesday to finish in a tie for second-place and lead the Air Force golf team to a fourth-place finish at the OIGO UCSB Intercollegiate at the par-72 Sandpiper Golf Club in Santa Barbara, Calif. The Falcons shot a five-over par 293 on Tuesday for a three-round total of 876 (+12), seven shots behind tournament champion Long Beach State.
Westmoreland, the only player in the tournament to break 70 in the final round, finished with a three-round total of two-under par 214 for his fourth top-five finish this season and ninth in his career. After falling to +1 on the day with bogeys at 9 and 10, Westmoreland played the final eight holes in four-under par, including an eagle at the par-5 13th hole. He and Utah's Casey Halliday finished two strokes behind individual medalist Owen Taylor of Sacramento State.
"We needed to have a perfect round today and it just didn't quite materialize," said Air Force head coach George Koury. "We hit a rough stretch in the middle of the round. Kyle played solid today and we will build on this for the Mountain West Championships next week."
Senior Jack Howard finished in a tie for 23rd place at 221 (+5), while freshman Sunwoo Choi tied for 28th at 223 (+7). Seniors Todd Berglund (T, 36th) and Philip Colwell (T, 41st) rounded out the team roster for Air Force. Colwell posted the team's second-best round on Tuesday with a one-over par 73.
The Falcons had two individuals in the tournament as freshman Andy Germann tied for 36th place (227) and junior Blake Edwards finished in a tie for 44th (229).
The Falcons head to Tucson, Ariz., for the 2014 Mountain West Championships, held April 25-27 at OMNI Tucson National.
