DES MOINES, Iowa - With four field events and one relay on the schedule, the Air Force track and field team wrapped up competition at the 105th Drake Relays this afternoon (April 26) in Des Moines, Iowa. Senior Kassie Gurnell posted the squad's best finish of the day, as she earned a top-10 finish in the triple jump.
Gurnell recorded a distance of 40'10 ½" in her signature event to tie for the fifth-best mark of the day, while placing sixth overall based on tie-breaking procedures.
Sophomore Grant Hamilton, who tossed a 169'3" to improve his season-best distance in the discus throw during a 13th-place performance, added a 15th-place mark of 54'11½" in the show put. Senior William Kent rounded out the Falcons' field event competitors, as he recorded a distance of 174'10" to finish 23rd in the hammer throw.
The Falcons competed in just one event on Drake's Blue Oval today, as the quartet of senior Charlie Perkins, classmate Dan Bieber, sophomore Stone Shoaf and fellow sophomore Kevin Mihalik finished 15th in the Jim Wheelock Distance Medley Relay. That is the team's second-fastest DMR this season, trailing only the Academy-record time that was set yesterday at the Penn Relays.
The Falcons return to action next Saturday (May 3), when they open the month of May at the Ward Haylett Invitational in Manhattan, Kan.
