MINDEN, Nev. - Backed by a victory from sophomore Brett Hagen, the Air Force boxing team kicked off its season on Saturday, Sept. 13, at the Carson Valley Invitational in Minden, Nevada. Hagen, who earned the year's first Boxer of the Night award, was one of four Falcons to compete against National Collegiate Boxing Association (NCBA) opponents from Washington and Nevada.
Competing at 154 pounds in his first-ever NCBA event, Hagen won a clear decision over Nevada's Kirk Jackson in the Falcons' first bout of the night.
Classmate Samuel Sheikh suffered a referee-stopped loss at 158 pounds, after taking a severe low blow in the opening round. Sheikh returned to the ring for the next round, but the official ultimately called the contest in the second. Fellow sophomore Laurynas Galdikas also lost a referee-stopped bout, when his 199-pound bout with defending NCBA national champion Garrett Felling was halted in the second round. Junior Jacob Berggren dropped a close decision to the reigning NCBA silver medalist Jarred Santos in the 144-pound contest to round out the quartet of Falcons' competing at Carson Valley Inn.
The Falcons return to action on Friday, Oct. 3, when they host Navy in the annual battle between the two service academies. Action is slated to begin at 6:00 p.m., in the boxing area of Cadet East Gym.
